Engineered hardwood floor offer great benefits and features
Engineered hardwood floor offer some features and benefits over solid wood floors. One of these benefits is that engineered hardwood floor can be installed above, on, or below ground level including installing over a concrete slab. Most Engineered floors are factory pre-finished which eliminates the mess, extra time and smell of applying finish coats. This also enables you to walk on your floors right after installation and the manufacturer ca apply more coats of finish making them more durable.
They are constructed of 3-5 cross grain wood piles that are glued together. The centre core of engineered hardwood floor is generally a softer wood material that the tongue and groove are made out of. A hardwood finish layer is glued on top of the center core and another softer wood ply is attached underneath the core. Wood naturally wants to expand across the width of the plank instead of the length. The manufacturers of engineered planks combat this problem by cross-ply construction which place each ply in the opposite direction of each other. Once the wood layers are glued together the plies eliminate the natural expansion the natural expansion and contraction of the wood.
The planks are generally stapled-down, glued-down and some can be floated over different types of sub-floors. The glue-down installation allows the planks to be used on concrete slabs. Engineered hardwood floor comes in varying widths including 21/4”,3”,5”,and7” widths. Plank styles can be mixed such as3-5-7 inch planks which can change the total appearance of the floor. With all the great features engineered floors are worth taking a look at for your project.
