Installing bamboo flooring can be very rewarding

When installing bamboo flooring there are a few preliminary steps you should take to ensure a trouble-free installation and numerous years of enjoyment. You should always refer to the manufacturer for complete pre-installation information. If you are gluing your floor directly to a concrete slab, it should be flat, clean and dry. A moisture test should be done and a high quality, urethane wood floor adhesive should be used. For floating floor installations 6 mil polyurethane should be placed over the concrete as a moisture barrier Wood sub-flooring also should be flat, clean, and dry, and moisture tested.

Prior to installing bamboo flooring the bamboo should be acclimatized to its installation environment for 2-3 days. Check your manufacturers details on how this should be done.

Solid bamboo flooring can be installed by nailing, stapling, or gluing. Gluing is the easier method and if you’re not familiar with the tools needed for stapling and nailing then it should be left to the experts. Engineered bamboo floors are generally designed for floated installation and is the easiest method requiring no glue just click-together systems.

You should lay out a plan to scale of your floor on a piece of graph paper. Make sure you allow a 1/2” expansion space between the flooring and the walls. This will help you determine the number of floor planks you need. You’ll want to sort through the bamboo since it has natural color variations so that you can decide how to distribute the contrasts. When installing bamboo flooring you should snap a chalk line on the sub-floor as a reference for the first row. This mark should be the width of the planking + the tongue + the expansion place from the wall. When using the floating floor method be sure to use spacers to maintain the expansion space.  Always refer to the manufacturer of your flooring for detailed installation directions.
