Wood flooring has an appeal that is timeless

Wood flooring has been used for centuries and never seems to loose its charm and warmth. With the growing popularity of wood floors manufacturers have come up with better quality finishes and superior construction techniques. Wood flooring comes in a wide variety of wood species, colors and widths. Consumers have numerous options now as manufacturers offer exotic hardwood species such as Brazilian Cherry, Australian cypress and many others from all over the World. Besides the most common North American species such as red oak, white oak, ash and maple. The three main types of wooden flooring manufactured are solid wood floors, engineered wood flooring and veneer wood floors. Solid wood floors are usually a ¾ ” thick plank and are cut out as a solid block right from the tree. They are processed into solid flooring planks with tongue and groove edges then are either pre-finished at the factory or placed into unfinished bundles. Another popular trend is Antique wood flooring which is made with reclaimed materials salvaged from America's turn-of-the-century structures which gives an authentic rustic character which some people feel is unobtainable with new wood.

Due to its thickness wood flooring that is solid can be sanded and refinished over several generations of use which adds to their appeal and long life. This type of flooring expands and contracts with changes in your homes humidity. Installers allow for this movement by leaving an expansion gap between the floor and the wall then hiding this space with a base molding. This flooring is designed for above ground or ground level installation only as it is sensitive to moisture therefore should not be installed below ground level. It should also not be installed directly over a concrete slab whereas engineered wood flooring can be. They are generally nailed in solid strips or planks to the sub-floor.  Antique wood flooring is available in random widths and lengths. It will have knots, some nail holes, hairline cracks and some worm tracks which all adds to its rustic look. Veneer wood floors are very similar to laminate floors. The only difference is that with the veneer wood floor that the top layer is a thin piece of real hardwood instead of a photographic image. Advantages of this type of floors are that they are quick and simple to install.

Wood Flooring On Sale

Engineered floors are constructed of multiple layers of 3-5 cross grain wood piles that are glued together. The centre core is generally a softer wood material and is used to make the tongue and groove. A hardwood finish layer is glued on top of the center core and another softer wood ply is attached underneath the core. Wood always wants to expand across the width of the plank rather than down the length. To combat this problem manufacturers of engineered planks place each ply in the opposite direction of each other which is called cross-ply construction. Once the wood layers are glued together the plies eliminate the natural expansion and contraction of the wood. Engineered wood flooring offers several advantages such as it can be installed above, on, or below ground level including installing over a concrete slab. Most Engineered floors are factory pre-finished which eliminates the mess, extra time and smell of applying finish coats. Floors are ready to walk on immediately and the manufacturer can apply more coats of finish.
